100% culture

Looking for a cultural break alternating art, history, heritage, know-how and local fare ?

Day 1

Settle into your hotel or B&B. Explore the locality and have dinner in one of the local  restaurants.
Day 2

  • Head for Annemasse and visit La Villa du Parc, a 300 sq. metre modern art centre that hosts exhibitions of works by national and international artists, offers guided tours, talks and shows and provides opportunities to meet artists and art critics.
Or
  • Round off these visits by a trip to the Cure Art et Jardins in St Séphorien. At present, it takes visitors back to the past with an exhibition entitled "School in Days Gone By" showing what schools were like from 1900 to 1970. A nostalgic trip back to the sights and smells of your childhood !

In the evening, you might like to a watch a retransmission from the Metropolitan Opera of New York at the  Cinéma Gaumont in Archamps, see an art house film at the Cinéma Rouge & Noir or go to a performance by cabaret artists at the Casino in Saint-Julien.

Day 3

  • Go to the Maison du Salève, a cultural venue where the permanent and temporary exhibitions, guided tours and workshops will take you back through time so that you can learn about the mountain itself, as well as its flora, fauna and history. Did you know that it was celebrities such as Horace-Bénédicte de Saussure and Jean-Jacques Rousseau who made the Salève range so popular with naturalists and geologists from the 18th century onwards ?
Or
  • Head for Saint-Julien town centre and the Marie-Pierre Maurer art gallery. It is a grandiose yet intimate setting in which to exhibit works by established artists and newcomers since the gallery is also a drawing and painting school.
The Maison du Salève and art gallery were both built in the 1800's and their architectural renovation will add to the pleasure of your visit!
Or
  • Given that an area draws some of its identity from its "terroir", head for the Vignoble de Féchy , a vineyard that existed back in the days of the Ancient Romans, and listen to some enthusiastic explanations of the work involved in tending the vines and producing wine. Tour of the cellar and a tasting session, mouthwatering additions to your programme.

Cultural events are never far away. Take a look at our diary on the day you arrive and you may be lucky enough to find a vernissage, a play, or a gospel concert or organ recital at the church in Beaumont
